Hello Yamaha FJR 1300

Luke Renton from Swinton Bikes on a Yamaha FJR 1300Weekend just gone, the Hayabusa was at the BMF show at Kent county showground in Detling. Unfortunately I was not with the bike this time. Instead it was being looked after by our very own Gary Springett.  Gary is one of our regional managers who is a member of a club that is affiliated to the British Motorcyclists Federation (BMF), so is a keen and active biker. He also instructs CBT’s and A2 tests at East Grinstead Rider Training School so it will be interesting to get his views of the Busa!

Although I was sad at being without the Hayabusa (it was gone for the whole weekend!) I was fortunate enough to be have the temporary loan of Gary’s bike; a 2006 Yamaha FJR 1300…..

What initially struck me about the FJR was the sure level of comfort it provides.  On my first ride I genuinely considered riding past home and nipping across to the continent! Cruising on the motorway is where it was in its element. The bar/seat/pegs combination allows for hours of effortless cruising, pop it in fifth gear, relax, and ride the wave of torque (whilst playing with the effective, adjustable, electric screen) until you either get to your destination or have decided you have travelled too far and realise it would be best to turn round and head back home.

Relax though Gary, I did not take your bike abroad!

The shaft drive made for very smooth acceleration, combined with a capable and torquey engine, made swift overtakes a doddle and general cruising very enjoyable. The only time the bike became more of a handful was on roads with tighter bends where the rather clunky gear change, overall weight and slight shaft drive lag, made swift and slightly more aggressive riding (slightly) less enjoyable than motorway or smooth A road work. The engine always felt willing to deliver in all situations. In my opinion, the Yamaha FJR is at its most efficient when being used in a slightly more touring rather than sport role. What I enjoyed most about the big Yamaha was the smoothness of the ride coupled with the immense comfort!

Would I buy a Yamaha FJR 1300……Yes, I think I would, however probably not for another 10 years….Sorry Gary!
