The government has to do more to stop reckless driving by motorcycle insurance customers and other road users at level crossings, it has been claimed.
Iain Coucher, chief executive of National Rail, has called for the driving test to include a section on level crossings in a bid to curb the instances of motorcycle insurance holders dodging round barriers as trains approach.
He states that around 95 per cent of incidents at level crossings are down to motorist or pedestrian misuse and suggests that many lives could be saved each year if best practice is reinforced at a national level.
"Motorists are too often playing Russian roulette with a 200-tonne train and tragically some lose their lives gambling at level crossings by running red lights or dodging around barriers," Mr Coucher claims.
The Confederation of British Industry has also called for changes to the driving tests, stating that motorcycle insurance customers should be taught how to drive in a more energy-efficient manner.
